Minced beef with mashed potatoes

This minced beef with mashed potatoes recipe is the kind of simple comfort food that never lets you down. It’s a no-fuss, one-pan wonder that’s full of flavour and ready in no time. It’s the sort of meal I remember eating around the kitchen table as a kid, and it still hits the spot decades later.

You don’t need anything fancy here. Just some good-quality minced beef, a bit of onion, and a quick beef gravy. No long lists of herbs or spices – just the rich, savoury flavour of the meat, with a few secret ingredients, made even better with buttery mash and some proper vegetables on the side. I usually go with carrots and peas, but anything seasonal will do the trick.

It’s the kind of dinner that’s perfect when you’ve had one of those days. The girls always go quiet when this hits the table – a sure sign they’re enjoying it – and it’s become a regular request, especially when we need something warming and hearty.

Mince beef recipe ideas – things to make with mince

There are so many minced beef recipes out there that you can make, and we certainly have a few on this blog: cottage pie, lasagne, spaghetti Bolognese, pasta bake, taco wraps, mince hotpot to name but a few.

But the best ground beef recipe? Well, that depends on what you are after. Each meal with ground beef has its own characteristics and different herbs and spices always give a certain variation to the meat.

It’s the kind of dinner that’s perfect when you’ve had one of those days. The girls always go quiet when this hits the table – a sure sign they’re enjoying it – and it’s become a regular request, especially when we need something warming and hearty.

You can cook this in under 20 minutes, so it’s ideal for a midweek meal. And if you’re feeding fussy eaters or those who prefer simple tastes, this one’s always a winner.

Beef Mince vs Ground Beef

What is minced beef? In the UK we call ground beef ‘mince’ or ‘minced meat’. It is minced steak or in other words, beef that has been through a mincer.

It can sometimes be confusing as the British also know a product called ‘mincemeat’. Mincemeat is something completely different: a mix of chopped fruits, spirits and spices which is used as a filling for mince pies which we eat at Christmas time.

These days this mincemeat mix would not normally contain meat, but in the past, it used to, hence the name.

Sometimes, you don’t need bells and whistles. Just a hot plate of beef mince and mash, a bit of gravy, and maybe a dollop of ketchup if you’re feeling rebellious. Proper food.

Serve it up with some mashed potatoes and baked carrots or boiled carrots and cooked peas. Enjoy!

Ground beef and gravy recipe

Ground beef and gravy recipe

This simple ground beef and gravy recipe is pure comfort food. The kids will love it. Easy and quick to make and a perfect combination with some simple veggies.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500g lean ground beef (minced beef)
  • 1 onion, chopped very small
  • 1 tsp Marmite
  • 2 tbsp HP sauce
  • 1 beef OXO cube
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Bisto gravy granules
  • Water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Carrots, peeled and chopped lengthways
  • Potatoes, peeled
  • Frozen Peas
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. In a pan fry the onion in the vegetable oil for one minute. Then add the ground beef to the pan and fry it until it is fully browned.
  2. While you are frying, use a wooden spatula to chop the ground beef so that the meat becomes smaller pieces of meat.
  3. Then add the crushed OXO cube, a few cups of water and bring to a simmer. Then add the Worcestershire sauce, HP sauce, Marmite and Bisto granules. [These are all pretty specific British ingredients which add a particular bite to the gravy. But I am sure if you have your own gravy ingredients they would do fine.]
  4. Now simmer the meat for about 10 minutes, stirring regularly and adding water if necessary to keep a good level of gravy.
  5. Season to taste and keep tasting the sauce to check the strength of the gravy. Add more gravy granules if needed. (You can add water from the pan boiling the potatoes and carrots to keep the nutrients.)
  6. While you are cooking the meat you can boil the potatoes and carrots in a separate pan (together).
  7. The peas only need a few minutes in boiling water to cook them, so they can be started later.
  8. Finally, after 10 minutes you can remove the carrots from the pan and produce the mashed potato according to this recipe. Or you can mash the carrots and potatoes together if you prefer.
  9. Check the meat is fully cooked before serving.

Notes

Serve up the ground beef together with mashed potatoes (or boiled potatoes), carrots and peas.
