Tuna Melt on Sourdough

The Ultimate Tuna Melt Sandwich Recipe: A Comfort Food Classic

A tuna melt on sourdough is a warm, comforting sandwich that perfectly blends creamy tuna salad and melted cheese. If you’ve ever wondered what is a tuna melt sandwich?, it’s essentially a grilled cheese combined with a cheesy tuna salad. This delightful creation is a go-to comfort food, especially when served on tangy fried sourdough bread.

Tuna Melt on Sourdough

A tuna melt on sourdough bread takes this classic sandwich to a new level. The tangy, crunchy texture of fried sourdough is the perfect contrast to the creamy tuna filling, giving every bite a satisfying crunch. The sourdough’s unique flavour also enhances the taste of the tuna mixture, making it a favourite choice for many. For the ultimate experience, it’s best to toast the sourdough in the pan slightly before adding the tuna and cheese salad. This prevents the bread from getting soggy and ensures a crispy, golden exterior. I also use both olive oil and butter to ensure a golden finish to the bread.

Some people wonder, does tuna melt have mayonnaise? The answer is yes, of course it does! Mayonnaise is a key ingredient in most tuna melt sandwich recipes. It binds the tuna salad together, providing a creamy texture and enhancing its flavour. For those who prefer a lighter option, Greek yoghurt or mashed avocado can be used as substitutes.

Tuna Sandwich on Sourdough

When making a tuna sandwich on sourdough, the choice of ingredients matters. The classic tuna salad typically includes mayonnaise, mustard, diced celery, and onion, creating a perfect blend of creaminess and crunch. Here I use some cream cheese, but you can of course use cheddar or even Swiss cheese to enhance the taste.

This mixture transforms into a savoury, melted delight when grilled on sourdough bread. The tangy notes from the bread complement the savoury filling, making every bite delicious.

What Bread for Tuna Melt?

Choosing the right bread for your tuna melt-on-bread recipe can make all the difference. While sourdough is a popular option for its texture and flavour, other choices include rye, whole wheat, or even English muffins.

Each type of bread brings a unique taste to the sandwich, but sourdough remains a favourite for us due to its crispy exterior and distinctive taste that pairs perfectly with the creamy, cheesy filling. And your kids will also love it!

Notes

Add some finely chopped celery as an alternative (I left it out as my girls do not like celery). Alternatively serve together with some avocado.
