Ham and Cheese Toastie
This is a simple recipe for a ham and cheese toastie. I have made this recipe a little bit special by using some Swiss raclette cheese to add some class to the recipe.
Where I come from, a toastie is a hot sandwich made in a toastie-maker or sandwich maker. Look at the recipe card below to see what I mean. Normally we put butter on the outside to toast the outside of the toastie. The other ingredients go into the sandwich. But as the sandwich maker normally seals the sandwich at the edges, it makes it very different to this recipe.
In this cheese and ham toastie recipe, you fry the bread separately in olive oil. We also fry the ham and melt the cheese in the same pan.
The result is an open melted cheese and ham sandwich that is just delicious. Once you have tried one, you will be making this every day (as we did for a week!). It is easy and quick to make and is the perfect snack or even main meal.
Grilled ham and cheese
In the USA you probably call this a Grilled Ham and Cheese. You obviously will have plenty of types of thinly cut ham, that you can use in this sandwich.
I am not sure what types of cheese you have available in the USA. I know the FDA can be quite strict on some cheeses. But I am sure you will be able to get some good raclette cheese. If you can, then please do, as it really does make this sandwich. You really cannot compare it to some simple melted American cheese I am afraid. This raclette cheese is very tasty. It is designed to melt.
And as for the bread. Well, just use what you can find that is good – I used some Portuguese cereal sliced sourdough bread, but a basic sourbread or a crusty loaf is also perfect. Just make sure you get the crispiness into the bread by frying it in the pan in the oil. And let it cool a bit to crisp up, before adding the mayo and mustard.
Cheese and Ham Toastie Calories
The calories in a ham and cheese toastie will vary quite a bit. It will depend ultimately on the amount of ingredients that you actually use. Using olive oil to fry the bread already adds about 240 calories to the meal! According to Nutritionix, which automatically calculates the calories in a meal, this sandwich was a little more than 1070 calories! This is based on the ingredient quantities in the recipe card. But obviously, the type and thickness of bread you use and the amount of mayo and cheese will make a big difference.
All we can be certain of is this: there’s nothing quite like the simple pleasure of a perfectly crafted ham and cheese toastie sandwich! Eat it at your leisure at any time of the day.
I hope you enjoy this simple recipe. If you do try it please let me know how you got on and how you improved it in your kitchen!
