Christmas Smoked Salmon Nibbles

These Christmas smoked salmon nibbles are one of the easiest and most elegant starters you can make over the holidays. They’re quick to assemble, look festive on a plate, and – most importantly – taste absolutely brilliant with a glass of fizz or a good G&T.

Smoked salmon is still one of those luxuries that feels indulgent without needing to break the bank. And here in Ireland, we’re lucky to have great access to quality Irish and Scottish smoked salmon – even some flavoured with Irish whiskey, which adds a lovely subtle warmth and richness.

The ultimate Christmas canapé

If you’re looking for a no-fuss Christmas Eve nibble, these are ideal. We ended up having them for our entire dinner last year – feet up, Christmas film on, wine in hand. No mess, no stress, and no cooking. That’s a win in my book.

The recipe couldn’t be simpler: a salty cracker, a dollop of cream cheese (light or full-fat – whatever you fancy), a slice of smoked salmon and a drizzle of dill mustard sauce. I often keep a jar from Ikea in the fridge, but if you fancy making your own, I’ve got a recipe for that too.

For the cream cheese, you can always choose a light version if you are worried about calories. We don’t though really, too much……😃

As for the dill, mustard and honey sauce  – you can either buy one ready-made from Ikea or Amazon, for example, or make your own.

Mix it up

There’s loads of room to personalise these – try adding capers, a squeeze of lemon, fresh dill, even a sliver of cucumber or avocado. Or if you’re feeling fancy, a dab of caviar wouldn’t go amiss.

If you can find one-bite crackers, then even better. Less chance of crumbs on the floor!

Serve them cold, with a chilled drink, and enjoy the smug satisfaction of not having to cook while still serving something that looks the business.
