What Makes a Tuna Melt So Irresistible?
Let’s get one thing straight – a tuna melt is not just a tuna sandwich. Oh no, it’s so much more. At its core, it’s the perfect blend of creamy tuna salad and gooey melted cheese, toasted to golden perfection. The balance between warm and cool, soft and crisp, creamy and sharp makes it a serious all-time favourite.
In this homemade version, you’ve got the freedom to play with the ingredients and make it exactly the way you like it – cheddar or Swiss, white or sourdough, mayo or Greek yoghurt. But the goal is always the same: crunchy bread, melty cheese, and a tuna salad that’s loaded with flavour.

Tuna Melt Origins – A Diner Staple with Timeless Appeal
The tuna melt became a staple on American diner menus in the mid-20th century, popularised by its no-fuss ingredients and soul-satisfying taste. It’s believed to have been born by accident when someone spilled tuna salad onto a grilled cheese – and thank goodness they did!
Now, it’s beloved worldwide in slightly different forms – sometimes open-faced, sometimes topped with tomato, sometimes piled with extra cheese. But at home, you get to create the version that fits your mood and your pantry.

Why Canned Tuna is the Secret Star
Don’t underestimate the humble tin of tuna – it’s the star of the show here. Canned tuna is affordable, protein-rich, and has that mild, meaty flavour that pairs beautifully with tangy mayo and sharp cheese. We use it in a lot of recipes, but especially our go to meal, tuna pasta. But make sure you use sustainable tuna.
For the best homemade tuna melt, choose tuna in oil for richness, or go with tuna in brine for a lighter taste. Make sure to drain it well before mixing, especially if you’re using other creamy elements like mayo or cream cheese.
Tuna Melt Must-Haves: The Classic Combo
A great homemade tuna melt comes down to a few solid ingredients:
-
Canned Tuna – flaky and ready to mix
-
Mayonnaise – classic binder with creamy tang
-
Diced Onion or Celery – for crunch and bite
-
Cheese – cheddar, Swiss, or even mozzarella
-
Bread – sourdough, rye, or your everyday sandwich loaf
-
Butter or Olive Oil – for that golden crust
Toast the bread low and slow in a skillet for a perfectly crisped outside and a gooey, melted centre. Serve it up with a few pickles, some avocado, some kettle chips, or a side salad and you’ve got the ultimate lunch.

Once you’ve mastered the base, get creative! Try stirring a spoonful of Dijon mustard or chopped pickles into the tuna mix. Add slices of tomato or red onion. Swap in Greek yoghurt or mashed avocado for a lighter take. Or go bold with jalapeños and hot sauce for a spicy tuna melt twist.
You can even bake the sandwich open-faced under the grill for a rustic look with extra cheese bubbles.
A Sandwich Worth Melting For
A homemade tuna melt is the definition of cozy, everyday luxury. It’s fast, filling, and deeply nostalgic – a sandwich that brings joy with every bite. Whether you serve it as a quick work-from-home lunch, a late-night snack, or a satisfying weekend meal, it’s always a winner.

Notes
Add some finely chopped celery as an alternative (I left it out as my girls do not like celery). Alternatively serve together with some avocado.
