Fried Bananas across the Globe
This simple but tasty dish is enjoyed in many countries across the World, and in many Asian countries, it is known as Pisang Goreng (which means fried banana in Indonesian).
In the Netherlands, this dish is often part of a ‘Rijsttafel‘, which is a mix of Indonesian dishes stemming from the old Dutch colony.
In Asia and other countries quite often cooking bananas (plantains) will be used to make this dish. This may take a little bit longer cooking time than using normal Cavendish bananas (as I have used here).
In India, you may come across ‘Pazham Pori’ which is also a fried banana dish. In Brazil, you have ‘Banana Frita’ which are also deep-fried plantains which may be served with your rice and beans.
Everyone has their own variations: some recipes use breadcrumbs, some use batter, some use nothing! Some sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, others with nutmeg and some with powdered sugar.
In some places, vegetable oil is used to fry, in others coconut oil or ghee. Some cut the bananas in the middle, others cut them lengthways and some cut them into banana chips.
Some even fry them twice.
My advice is to try them all, until you find your best way of doing it!
This recipe is quick and easy and uses normal ripe (ready to eat) Cavendish bananas with a simple crispy batter, and I leave the sweet sprinkle choice up to you.

Recipe for Banana Fritters
This easy and quick recipe will give you some perfect banana fritters, crisp on the outside and hot and gooey on the inside. A perfect quick sweet dish.
Ingredients
- 2 bananas (Cavendish) (If you use plantains then you may need to cook a bit longer)
- 140ml cold water
- 1 tsp baking powder (or baking soda)
- 100g self-raising flour
- Pinch of salt
- Sunflower oil (to fry with)
Optional
- 1 tbsp caster sugar & 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (mixed)
- OR
- Powdered sugar
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a wok or deep fryer, until it is shimmering.
- In the meantime peel the bananas and cut each in the middle into two pieces, or longitudinally, as you prefer.
- Whisk together the flour, water, baking powder and salt in a bowl by hand to give a nice thick batter.
- Coat the banana pieces in the batter, and carefully place them in the hot oil (careful not to splash boiling oil - I do this with some tongs). In a deep fryer, place them in the basket. You may need to do this in batches.
- Make sure they do not touch together in the oil or they will stick together.
- Cook the bananas in the wok for about 4-5 minutes, turning once, until the batter is browned on all sides.
- Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and leave to cool a little on some kitchen paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
Notes
Serve warm after the excess oil has drained and while still crispy.
Optional: serve either with sieved powdered sugar sprinkled on top, or with the fried bananas dipped in a mix of caster sugar and cinnamon.

I would not recommend storing these after frying (I have not tried but I suspect they will no longer be crispy). And I have not tried baking. If you do, let me know if it works!
