Roquefort Pasta – A Creamy French Blue Cheese Pasta Dish

If you love rich and comforting pasta dishes, this Roquefort pasta is the kind of meal that instantly feels indulgent. Creamy, bold, and packed with flavour, it transforms a simple bowl of pasta into something that feels wonderfully French and surprisingly sophisticated.

Roquefort is one of the world’s most famous blue cheeses and has been produced in southern France for centuries. Made from sheep’s milk and aged in the natural caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon, it has a distinctive tangy flavour and creamy texture that melts beautifully into sauces. Unlike milder blue cheeses, Roquefort has a deeper salty richness and a slightly earthy complexity that gives this pasta dish its signature character.

What makes creamy Roquefort pasta so appealing is the contrast between the silky sauce and the boldness of the cheese. Once melted, Roquefort creates a luxurious coating for the pasta, delivering a velvety texture with just the right amount of sharpness. It feels decadent without needing lots of complicated ingredients.

French or Italian?

This type of dish sits somewhere between rustic French cooking and classic Italian comfort food. Pasta itself may not traditionally belong to French cuisine, but combining creamy sauces and strong cheeses absolutely does. The result is a fusion of rich European flavours that works beautifully for an easy dinner or cosy evening meal.

One of the reasons Roquefort pasta recipes are becoming increasingly popular online is that they feel restaurant-worthy, while still being incredibly simple and comforting. Rich cheese sauces always perform well with food lovers looking for indulgent comfort meals. And Roquefort adds a more refined twist compared to standard cheddar or cream cheese pasta sauces.

This dish also pairs wonderfully with additional ingredients. Walnuts, spinach, mushrooms, crispy bacon, or grilled chicken all complement the salty creaminess of Roquefort beautifully. Black pepper and garlic can add extra warmth and depth, while fresh herbs help balance the richness.

As for the pasta itself, shapes like penne, rigatoni, or tagliatelle work especially well because they hold onto the creamy sauce perfectly.  For these photos, I used some tricoloured trottole vegetable pasta from Mercadona. A little pasta water stirred into the sauce creates that glossy finish that makes the dish look as good as it tastes.

Serve your Roquefort blue cheese pasta with crusty bread, a crisp green salad. And perhaps a chilled glass of white wine for the perfect comfort food dinner.

Rich, creamy, salty, and deeply satisfying, Roquefort pasta is proof that a few quality ingredients can create something truly memorable.

Total Time 11 minutes

Ingredients

  • 300g dry pasta
  • 1 shallot, very finely chopped
  • Knob of butter
  • 125g Roquefort blue cheese (or another blue cheese if you prefer)
  • 200ml double cream
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Optional

  • Chopped chives

Instructions

  1. Boil the pasta in a saucepan according to the manufacturer's instructions. Meanwhile, melt the butter in the pan and add the chopped shallot. Cook the shallot for about 5 minutes on a low to medium heat, stirring regularly.
  2. Then add the blue cheese to the pan and wait until it has all melted before adding the cream.
  3. Stir well and heat for about one minute, seasoning with black pepper to suit. You will not need to add any salt, as the cheese is already very salty. Finally, garnish with the chives.
  4. Drain the pasta and add back into the saucepan. Then add the sauce and mix well before serving.
