Ham and Cheese Toastie
There are few snacks as satisfying as a good air fryer ham and cheese toastie. Warm, toasted bread with melted cheese and savoury ham tucked underneath – it’s the ultimate comfort food. Whether enjoyed as a quick breakfast, lunch, late-night snack or something easy when nobody feels like cooking, the humble ham and cheese toastie always hits the spot. We have been eating this version a lot lately as the air-fryer solution is just absolute genious. We used to make it under the grill, but that required watching it to prevent burning. With the air fryer, you can just put it in there, set the timer and job done.

Using the air fryer for a toastie
In recent years, the air fryer has become a game-changer for simple meals like this. Traditionally, a ham and cheese toastie would be made in a frying pan or under the grill. Both methods work perfectly well, but the air fryer offers a convenient and surprisingly effective alternative. It cooks the sandwich evenly, crisping the bread beautifully while melting the cheese on top. Because the hot air circulates all around the sandwich, you get that lovely golden crunch without constantly watching or flipping it.
For busy households, the air fryer is especially useful. It heats up quickly, does not require any oil, and takes the guesswork out of achieving that perfect crisp finish. Instead of juggling pans or standing by the grill, you can simply let the air fryer do its thing while you prepare the rest of your meal – or just sit back and relax.
Of course, the magic of a toastie isn’t only about the cooking method. It’s also about the flavours tucked inside. The classic pairing of ham and melted cheese is hard to beat. The salty richness of the ham blends perfectly with the creamy, gooey cheese, creating a filling that feels both indulgent and comforting.

The secret ingredients
But sometimes it’s the little extras that make a simple sandwich truly memorable. In this version, two slightly unexpected ingredients take things up a notch: Marmite and mayonnaise. Marmite, with its bold, savoury depth, adds a punch of umami that enhances the flavour of the cheese and ham. Used sparingly, it transforms the toastie without overpowering it.

Mayonnaise, on the other hand, adds some creamy richness and tang that balances the strong flavours of the Marmite and cheese.
Together, these small additions turn a standard ham and cheese toastie into something a little more special – crispy, gooey and full of flavour. And using a fresh white bread roll as an open-faced sandwich gives you two instead of one!
Served with a bowl of soup, a handful of crisps, or even just on its own, an air fryer ham and cheese toastie is proof that simple food can still be seriously satisfying.
